Ghosts of Cyprus

Ghosts of Cyprus
Short Documentary (TV), 2015

The Legacy of Division in Cyprus and Prospects for Reconciliation

The intercommunal violence that erupted in Cyprus during the 1960s culminated in a Greek-sponsored coup in 1974, which in turn prompted a military intervention by Turkey. These events led to the division of the island into a predominantly Greek Cypriot south and a Turkish Cypriot north — a status quo that endures to this day, despite numerous attempts at reunification.

Amidst the enduring political stalemate, an important humanitarian initiative has emerged. Greek and Turkish Cypriot volunteers are collaborating to locate and identify the remains of individuals who went missing during the conflict. This joint effort, often conducted under the auspices of bi-communal committees,

has provided long-awaited closure to families and represents a significant step toward reconciliation at the societal level.

Nonetheless, the broader geopolitical situation remains fraught. The unresolved status of Northern Cyprus continues to impede Turkey’s formal recognition of the Republic of Cyprus and remains a central barrier to Turkey’s accession to the European Union. Diplomatic progress is further hindered by mutual distrust,

competing national narratives, and broader regional tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Despite these challenges, grassroots cooperation between the two communities demonstrates that reconciliation is possible through shared humanitarian goals. While a comprehensive political settlement remains elusive, initiatives centred on truth, memory, and dignity offer a foundation upon which more constructive relations may eventually be built.
